Hey guys! So, as you may (or may not) know, I’m a part of the HuffPost Girls in STEM program! I’ve been working over the past several weeks with my amazing mentor Emilie learning about memories and how we store and remember them. So, as a part of this project, we decided to do a small project about memories—specifically, mapping about the brain networks through which memories are encoded and retrieved.

To do this, we need some sample memories.

This is where you guys come in!

It’d be fantastic if you guys could volunteer some memories for our project for us to analyze—it’s completely anonymous so if you write about the time you accidentally slipped and fell in front of your entire science class we won’t know it’s you ;)

Any memory will suffice—although we know you guys have some interesting ones. Maybe one time your neighbor’s cat looked at you kind of funny? Or maybe you accidentally dropped an egg but managed to catch it before it hit the ground and you decided that you were probably a ninja.

In 1949 this beach was an unrestricted dump. For 18 years glass, car parts, razors and other broken and used items were thrown away here before the council realised it was probably a bad idea. For the next 30 years, the elements worked their magic on all of the rubbish and with humans rectifying their mistake by removing rusted metals and other objects, this beach is now a unique and beautiful tourist attraction.

Few glaciers in the world draw more interest from glaciologists than Pine Island Glacier (P.I.G.), in West Antarctica. The speed of its ice flow has been increasing exponentially in the past two decades. P.I.G. rests on bedrock that sits below sea level — making it more vulnerable to continued acceleration and increased contribution to global sea level rise.

P.I.G. also drains a massive section of the West Antarctic ice sheet that, alone, would add about 1 meter to global sea level.

Given all this, it should be no surprise that scientists — including those at NASA — have made P.I.G. a high-value science target. Why is it accelerating so rapidly? How much of its ice will move into the sea in future years; how much sea level rise will it cause? These are the questions scientists are trying to answer, using satellite data, observations from low-altitude research flights and even field campaigns to the bitter cold and remote region.

Dogs may have become man’s best friend thanks, in part, to their ability to stomach a starchy diet.

According to new genetic research, domestic dogs’ genomes better equip them to handle starches than wolves. Domestic dogs also show differences from wolves in portions of the genome linked to brain development, perhaps hinting at behavioral changes that occurred as canines became less wild.

Groups Move to Stop Arctic Offshore Drilling After Mishap

Two national environmental groups are calling for a halt to federal permits for Arctic offshore petroleum drilling after the grounding of a Royal Dutch Shell PLC drill ship off Alaska’s coast.

Representatives of the Natural Resources Defense Council and The Wilderness Society say Shell has demonstrated it’s not ready to drill in Arctic waters. They say the risks are too large to make mistakes in one of the most fragile places on earth.
